Siemens announces plan to launch four digital innovation centres in India

Technology services and solutions provider Siemens has said that it will launch four new digital innovation centres in the country as it seeks to expand its Industry 4.0 offerings.

Industry 4.0 is a name for the current trend of automation and data exchange in manufacturing technologies and includes Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud computing.

Called MindSphere Application Centers, the innovation centres which are currently executing over 100 projects for 150 customers will be launched in Pune, Noida and Gurugram, the company said in a statement.

MindSphere is Siemens’ open cloud-based operating system for the Internet of Things (IoT) that connects products, plants, systems, and machines, enabling enterprises to access data generated by IoT with advanced analytics.

The Germany-headquartered firm, which employs 2,500 engineers, said that around 900 software developers, data specialists and engineers work together with Siemens customers at these centres to develop digital innovations for data analysis and machine learning.

“India continues to be a high-priority market for Siemens,” said Roland Busch, chief technology officer and member of the managing board of Siemens AG. “The MindSphere Application Centers will enable us to apply our industry knowledge, scale up our digital-enabled solutions and enhance long-term support to customers in infrastructure, process industries and the power sectors."

Around a million devices and systems worldwide are now connected via MindSphere, Busch said.

During the fiscal year 2017, Siemens reported revenue of 5.2 billion euros from its digital technology services – representing a 20% increase year-on-year.

More than 75% of this was attributable to software and the rest to digital services. It had also said that that it was increasing its research and development spend in fiscal 2018 and would invest an additional sum of around 450 million euros. 

Last month, the German conglomerate had launched an online collaborative platform for industrial 3D printing firms to co-create, co-innovate and come up with new business models. 

Called Additive Manufacturing Network, the platform is expected to focus on design, engineering skills, knowledge, digital tools and production capacity. First announced as a concept in 2017, the platform was rolled out with an early-adopter programme.
