Social networking grabs lion's share of time spent online in India, followed by Google, Yahoo sites: comScore study

Google sites remain the top destination for Indian Internet surfers, followed by Facebook and Yahoo sites as per a study released by web research firm comScore. In a latest study, the firm reveals the most visited sites and average time spent by the visitors. As per the study, Google sites reached around 95 per cent of the online users, whereas social networking was the number one online activity, accounting for 25.2 per cent of online time spent.

As per the study, Google had 57.8 million unique visitors and Facebook had 50.9 million unique visitors with a 83.4 per cent reach, followed by Yahoo sites (65.5 per cent), Microsoft sites (48.1 per cent), Times Internet Ltd (33.7 per cent), Network 18 (29.3 per cent), Rediff.com India (25.2 per cent)and NIC.in had 21.8 per cent reach in June.

An average of four hours was spent by visitors on Facebook in June 2012. In local media sites, Network 18 was the most engaging site with average time spent being around 31.6 minutes. Social networking has retained its top position, when it comes to engagement of online population. In 2011 June also social networking had grabbed the maximum amount of time spent online (24.4 per cent), almost similar to this June (25.2 per cent). The time spent on entertainment sites jumped from 8.8 per cent last year to 10 per cent this year. Retail sites did not register much growth in online time spent. Last year it had 1.5  per cent of online time spent, while this year it was 2 per cent. The survey was conducted on users aged 15 years and above and using internet from work or home. The survey, however, does not include internet usage from mobile phones or internet cafes.
