Exclusive: Paying salary for AskMe staff is management’s responsibility, says Astro

ASKme_Bazaar3Malaysia’s Astro Group, the controlling stakeholder in the defunct ecommerce firm AskMe, has put the onus to pay employees and vendors on the company management led by chairman Sanjiv Gupta. Astro has been under fire from Gupta and other employees of AskMe for not transferring funds as per its commitment, leading to suspension of operations and nonpayment of salaries and other dues.

Astro holds 98.5% stake in AskMe, incorporated as Getit Infoservices Pvt. Ltd, through its subsidiary Astro Entertainment Networks Ltd (AENL). The company spokesperson, in a written response to Techcircle.in, has categorically said AENL as a shareholder owes Getit no further funds.

“Paying employee dues was a role that management of Getit should have proactively planned for and managed as part of their duty of care for their employees,” the spokesperson said.

He said the management led by Sanjiv Gupta overspent despite being cautioned against the company’s financial troubles.

“The responsibility for keeping Getit afloat has always been that of the management and directors. It must be noted that between 2013 and 2016, Sanjiv Gupta as one of the minority shareholders was called upon on several occasions by the board of Getit, to inject funds into the business, but none of the minority shareholders, including Sanjiv Gupta, subscribed to the rights issues,” he added.

Astro has strongly criticised Gupta for mismanaging the business and finally resigning without any accountability to employees. “Managing director of Getit in the period from 2012 to 2016, Sanjiv Gupta was contractually responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the company, and must be held accountable for the approximately $300 million that AENL has invested in the business from 2010 to date,” Astro spokesperson said.

“Gupta has taken no responsibility of mismanaging the business, spending $300 million with poor results, continued to increase monies owed to vendors when he knew the business was to be scaled down, and most importantly resigned without any accountability to the employees, board or shareholders to oversee the company during this period,” he added.

Astro has also said the board of directors of Getit considered the management buyout offer by Gupta and found it unviable. Gupta had made repeated attempts to initiate a management buyout of AskMe.

“It is disappointing to observe that Sanjiv Gupta continues to stress on his MBO (management buyout) offer by way of various media reports, but has been unable to revert with a single genuine offer that comes with a credible financial backer, that will allow Getit to continue to operate as a going concern,” he said. “There was no clarity of how Sanjiv was to continue to fund the business, and employees,” he said.

Astro has also alleged that Gupta and his leadership team at AskMe did not pay heed to the investor’s advice to scale down and cut cost.

Does anybody know how much did Sanjiv Gupta make from 300 Million? different people are estimating different numbers, anywhere from 45 to 90 million.

Naveen September 28, 2016 6:51

The employees does not have the responbility in this. As the MD it was Mr Gupta’s responsibility to see to it that employees and vendors be paid. The business at askme failed to generate revenue only because of the incompetency of the management in areas such as product design, service delivery, revenue generation etc. The employees especially the sales force were put on immense pressure by Mr gupta to sell a product which was poorly made. The employees suffered during the course of the business and now they were not even paid for the same. Astro should see this as they are also equally responsible for the mismanagement that happened at getit.

We as an employee always accepted what management decided/told us i.e manpower attrition, late payment etc… and kept working for the Company as a while, not for any stakeholder. How irresponsible the management can be who never informed to employees that what going on between Sanjiv & Astro….Did Sanjiv told to anyone? NO.

Employees were under essence of fund crisis but no one was informed that it can lead to company closure….we may have got some work in time which people wasted by coming to office for 02 months without getting any pay….RUBBISH. Do justice with employees ELSE God will never forget who has played with us, I pray.

Sanjiv or Sanjeev Gupta is the real culprit behind all this and non payment of salaries and other dues of employees, he deliberately held back July salaries so that employees would be forced to support him to go against Astro for his own benefit. He has a history of doing frauds. if you go through this link published recently by money control, you will be very clear about who has done what.

Even this is only the tip of the iceberg. Sanjiv Gupta along with selected top level executives and loyal yellow pages employees has done massive frauds in the company wherever possible and siphoned off huge money.

Sanjiv Gupta is the same person who as CEO of ABCL led to the bankruptcy of the company. While working with coke, he was the reason behind so many controversies and dent to the Brand.

All employees of the company want to know what happened to 150 crores of money which was released by Astro in the month of June.
Except releasing June salary and making some vendor payments, balance money seemed to have gone into the black hole controlled by Gupta. All those who are suffering due to fraud and mis management done by Sanjiv Gupta will never forgive him and God will definitely punish him in his own way. He can run away with money and ruin the future of the employees but cannot run away from the God’s court and judgement. Since Astro is into other legal troubles in India, Gupta is trying to extort money from Astro in the name of employees and also get hold of the company back for Free.
