Razorpay hires OnePlus India's Karan Sarin as marketing chief

Razorpay_feBengaluru-based online payment gateway startup Razorpay Software Pvt. Ltd has appointed Karan Sarin, former marketing head at smartphone maker OnePlus India, as its chief marketing officer.

In his new role, Sarin will focus on building Razorpay's brand, nationally and globally, generating customer demand, planning strategic events and designing the firm's communication strategy, the company said in a statement.

As OnePlus India's marketing head, Sarin was responsible for developing and executing the company's marketing and communications strategy. Apart from managing brand building activities of OnePlus, he also oversaw all aspects of consumer marketing and hiring.

Before OnePlus, Sarin was director of Flipkart's B2B and gift card business from December 2013 to April 2015. He also founded a SaaS-based startup Perkylane, which offered employee benefits via a cloud-based app that connected organisations and their employees with local vendors.

Razorpay was founded in 2013 by IIT Roorkee alumni Shashank Kumar and Harshil Mathur. The firm helps businesses accept online payments via credit, debit card, net banking and mobile wallets.

Till date, the firm has raised $11.5 million from marquee investors including Tiger Global, Matrix Partners and Y Combinator. It has 33 angel investors including Snapdeal founders Kunal Bahl and Rohit Bansal; InMobi founders Abhay Singhal, Amit Gupta and Naveen Tewari; FreeCharge founders Kunal Shah and Sandeep Tandon; and Flipkart's former chief product officer Punit Soni.

In July, Razorpay secured an undisclosed investment from American payments and financial services firm MasterCard.
