How India tuned into Hotstar to watch IPL 2016

Loading...

A 100 million people watched the Indian Premier League (IPL) this year on video over-the-top (OTT) platform Hotstar, with 61% of the viewers watching the cricket tournament on their mobiles. Launched last February during the ICC Cricket World Cup, Star India Pvt Ltd-owned Hotstar has seen a steady increase in its user base.

Much of the credit goes to the IPL which has its own strong fan base in the digital world. What made the cricket tournament even more entertaining on Hotstar was the content created around the IPL, which included pre- and post-show programming. During the two-month long tourney which saw SunRisers Hyderabad defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final match to lift the IPL 2016 trophy on May 29, viewers could watch two wraparound shows – Cricket Live and One Tip One Hand, along with The Boundary Riders, a video blog.

Star India runs Hotstar through its subsidiary Novi Digital Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. Star India is part of 21st Century Fox, the media house owned by Rupert Murdoch. Murdoch also owns News Corp, the parent of this news website.
