Gurgaon-based Zomato Media Pvt Ltd, the company behind popular restaurant listing and review site Zomato.com, has entered the online ordering space as a mobile-only offering. Its updated version of mobile app comes integrated with a meal ordering option.

The service has gone live with 1,000 restaurants currently and users can look for those outlets offering the option within the 'Nearby' tab in the app. It then throws up those names which offer online ordering as a sub-set of the overall list of restaurants in the location.

We have not checked the process throughout but it involves a mobile verification while placing the order.

The users would have to make cash payments as restaurant delivery boys come with the package.

The updated app also shows an option of cashless payments which is not active yet. Zomato spokesperson told Techcircle.in that this option is currently active only in Dubai and will soon be launched in India.

This would allow users to pay after a meal at a partner restaurant through the Zomato app, instead of paying cash or using credit/debit cards to settle bills at the restaurants.

It is not yet clear if this option would be integrated with the online food ordering feature.

Other online ordering ventures like Foodpanda already has integrated third-party wallets such as Paytm for online payments.

Zomato is launching online food ordering service for restaurants starting with Delhi NCR, Mumbai and Bangalore.

"We are hoping to start processing around 40,000 orders a day in the near term. Given that over 400,000 people visit our India section every day, this shouldn't be too hard to achieve," Deepinder Goyal, founder & CEO, Zomato had said earlier.

The firm had indicated that it will charge restaurants a commission based on the rating of the outlets.

Zomato aims to bring up to 10,000 restaurant partners in India on board over three months for online ordering.

The firm would not just be adding to its revenue streams through this initiative but also taking on focused players like Rocket Internet-backed Foodpanda and Tinyowl among several others.
