TC Show Off Ep 21: How Whoopiee app enables users to avail discounts in restaurants, salons & gyms

In the 21st episode of TC Show Off, a weekly show that provides startups a platform to showcase themselves, their business models, the core USP etc., Whoopiee's co-founder and director Harsimber Singh showcased how its mobile app allows users avail discounts in restaurants, salons and gyms by simply showing the app at the outlets.

The startup aims to do away with the hassle of sharing an SMS, credit/debit card details, or email print outs when a customer goes out to avail a particular offer at a restaurant, salon or gym. It works on the simple theory of serving loyal consumers instead of deal hunters who never show up again after taking a one-time heavy discount from such outlets.

Interestingly, it also doesn't pitch for heavy discounts (80-90 per cent), rather offers 15-20 per cent discounts on various services, with a focus on real-time offers. For example, if a person is standing in a mall and there is an offer in a nearby café, it would pop up on his/her mobile. This would allow the person to avail the offer then and there.

However, Siddharth Talwar, venture capitalist at Lightbox, has his doubts. He mentioned that the major concern was how the startup would drive enough traffic so that their app could stand against its competitors, who already have enough volume of deals. "Once you have the traffic then more and more deals would come," said Talwar.
