Micromax unveils 'Canvas Selfie' smartphone with 13MP front camera, launching next month

Canvas SelfieHome grown handset and tablet manufacturer Micromax has further expanded its Canvas range of smartphones in India with the launch of a new device called 'Canvas Selfie'. As the name already suggests, this one is primarily a selfie smartphone, and is equipped with 13 megapixel rear and front cameras. According to the company, the smartphone has been designed for image-conscious women (as if guys don't take selfies!), and comes with inbuilt beauty tools in the camera application.

These include Eye Enhancement- makes eyes bigger and brighter; Face slimming- helps give you high cheek bone effect and rid you of double chin; Skin Smoothening- helps remove all blemishes; Teeth Whitening- for white shiny teeth; and Remove Oil- to get rid of oil patches. Users can also add make up effects like mascara, eye-shadow, blush, and lip gloss, among others.

"With over a million selfies being taken every day, out of which 40 per cent claim to re-touch them, we have created a blend of hardware and software to give you that perfect selfie. Canvas Selfie is an ideal smartphone for selfie-obsessed users that quips them with great beauty editing tools to look glamorous always," said Vineet Taneja, CEO, Micromax.

While its exact pricing has not been disclosed by the company as of now, Canvas Selfie will be available for purchase in India from the second week of January 2015.

Here is a look at the specifications of the device.

The smartphone sports a 4.7 inch HD IPS touchscreen display (1280×720 pixels resolution) and runs on the Android 4.4 KitKat operating system. It is powered by a 1.7GHz octa-core processor and has 2GB of RAM. The internal memory of the device is 16GB that can be further expanded up to 32GB with a microSD card.

Canvas Selfie has a 13MP autofocus rear camera that can record full high definition videos (1080p) at 30 frames per second. Primarily a 'selfie' smartphone, it also features a 13MP front facing camera for video calling and capturing selfies. Both the front and rear camera have Flash and come with a Sony sensor. On the connectivity front, the device has Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, and 3G, as well as a microUSB port and a microSD card slot.

Micromax has provided a 2,300 mAh battery in the device, which also comes with dual-SIM capability and GPS (with A-GPS support). It will be available in mystic blue and angelic white colours.

In terms of competition, the other 'selfie' smartphones currently available in the market include Nokia Lumia 730, Lava Iris Selfie 50, Panasonic Eluga S, Sony Xperia C3, Alcatel OneTouch Flash, Microsoft Lumia 535, and the recently launched XOLO Opus 3, among others.
