Micromax's quad-core phablet offering Canvas 2.2 A114 available online for Rs 12,999

MicromaxAfter extending the Canvas experience to tablets with Canvas Tab P650 (priced at Rs 16,500) earlier this year, homegrown handset manufacturer Micromax has added yet another Canvas smartphone to the mix. Christened Canvas 2.2 A114 , this one has a 5 inch display and runs on the Android Jelly Bean operating system. While the company is yet to officially launch the device (its not listed on the Micromax website as of now), it is already available on Flipkart.com for a price of Rs 12,999.

Here is a look at the specifications of the device.

The smartphone has a 5-inch IPS qHD capacitive touchscreen display (960x540 pixels resolution) and is powered by a 1.5 GHz MT6582M quad core processor. It runs on the Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) operating system and has 2GB of RAM. The internal memory of the device is 4GB, which can be further expanded an additional 32GB with a microSD card.

On the camera front, the device has an 8 mega pixel autofocus rear camera with flash that can also record full high definition videos (1080p) and a 2 MP front facing camera for video calling. In terms of connectivity, the tablet has Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, and 3G and it also comes with a microUSB port and a microSD card slot. It also has full HD (1080p) video playback capabilities, FM radio with recording, and GPS.

The dimensions of the device are 73mm x 145mm x 9.7mm and its weight is 147 gm. The company has provided a 2,000 mAh battery in the device that it claims will provide up to 7 hours of talk time and 290 hours of standby time. The smartphone supports dual-SIM (GSM + GSM) and will be available in black colour. The company has also provided a number of pre-loaded applications in the smartphone that include M! Live, M! Security, Spuul, Hike, Bubble X Slice, Game Hub, and Dancing Bubbles, among others.

Targeted at the mid-price range segment (under Rs 15,000), the device will compete with the likes of Videocon A55 HD (Rs 12,389), iBall Quadro Andi 5h (Rs 12,950), Intex Aqua HD (Rs 12,989), LG Optimus L7 II P715 (Rs 12,999), Spice Pinnacle Stylus Mi-550 (Rs 12,999), and XOLO Q1000 (Rs 12,999), among others.

Micromax had recently roped in Hollywood actor Hugh Jackman as the new brand ambassador for its Canvas series of smartphones. The company has launched a 360 degree marketing campaign across print, online and TV with the actor, and is also looking to venture into international markets to grab a bite of the rising demand in other emerging markets. The firm, which had previously expanded its footprint in neighbouring markets such as Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, is now rolling out operations in Russia and Romania, an Eastern European market. Earlier this year, the company had also entered into a partnership with struggling Canadian handset manufacturer BlackBerry for the BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) app. As a part of the deal, all new Canvas smartphones that are purchased October 2013 onwards will have the BBM app pre-loaded in them. In addition, existing Canvas device owners can also download the app from the Google Play Store free of cost.
