Snapdeal.com, an online marketplace run by Jasper Infotech Pvt Ltd, has added a new 'chocolates and snacks category' to its offerings. The launch is in-line with the company's strategy of offering a wide assortment of products online across categories.

Last we checked, the site had around 313 products in sub categories like chocolates and cookies (227), cereals (21), dry fruits (1), ready to cook (7), gift packs (27), health & energy drinks (4), tea & coffee (7), flavours and spices (12) and dips, sauces & spreads (7). The 50 plus brands available on the site include Hershey's, Funfoods, Bikano, Del Monte, Fragata, Chokola, Ferrero Rocher, Nestle and Kellogg's, among others. The company is also offering gift packs. The products are available in the price range of Rs 169 to Rs 2,350.

"We decided to enter the category because 30 per cent of the market in organised retail is food and beverages," said Amit Maheshwari, VP, fashion merchandising, Snapdeal.

"Early this month, we piloted the category, but did not announce it in a big way since we were testing the backend involved with it (packaging and delivery) because these are perishable products," he added.

Snapdeal claims to be the largest online marketplace in India with products across categories like mobiles, electronics, fashion accessories, apparel, footwear, kids, home and kitchen, sports and books and services across restaurants, entertainment and spas. The company claims to have over 18 million members and is adding one million new subscribers on a monthly basis. It has more than 1,500 employees and delivers in more than 5,000 cities and towns.

Snapdeal is not the first horizontal e-commerce player to enter the food and beverages category. Players like Indiaplaza.com already offer cookies, cakes, chocolates, sweets and beverages.

The company had earlier introduced a mobile recharge service on its site. The new feature was added last month after it entered into a tie up with the popular recharge site Rechargeitnow to facilitate it.
