Mumbai-based startup Wicked Leak Inc has entered the low-priced Tablet market in India with a 7 inch Tablet called Wammy 7. The device runs on the Android operating system and can be purchased from the company's website  for Rs 5,500 (excluding taxes). But buyers also have the option of getting it for Rs 5,250 (excluding taxes) if they purchase it without the one-year warranty (although we don't see why anyone would do that).

But before we go any further, here's a look at the specs.

This one has a 7 inch LCD capacitive touchscreen display (800×480 pixel resolution) and runs on the Android Ice Cream Sandwich OS (out of the box). It is powered by a 1.2 GHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor (with Mali 400 GPU) and has 512 MB of RAM. The internal memory of the device is 4 GB, which can be expanded up to 32 GB with the help of a microSD card.

The device also features a 0.3 mega pixel front-facing camera that can record videos but there's no rear camera. On the connectivity front, the Tablet has Wi-Fi and 3G (with an external 3G dongle), and it comes with a USB 2.0 port, a microSD card slot and an HDMI port (which means it can stream full HD videos 1080p). There is a 3,800 mAh battery and the company claims that it will provide five hours of battery life and 15 days of stand-by time.

The Tablet measures 200 mm x 118 mm x 8 mm, and weighs 304 gm. It is available in black and white colours.

Low cost doesn't rule out competition

In the under-Rs 7,000 price range, Wammy 7 will compete with Tablets like Attitude Daksha (Rs 5,399), DataWind's Ubislate 7+ (Rs 2,999) and Ubislate 7c (Rs 3,999); Wishtel's IRA (Rs 4,000) and IRA Thing (Rs 5,500); and Micromax Funbook (Rs 6,499), among others.

In terms of specs, Wammy 7 is way better than DataWind's Ubislate (note that it costs also more), which is not much of a surprise since DataWind has a history of disappointments (can you forget the fizzled out Aakash which was supposed to bring a wave of change). Micromax's Funbook, on the other hand, is a much better competitor (their specs are like a carbon copy of each other) although it costs more.

But then, Funbook also offers additional features like an e-reading app with content from foremost publishers covering Class I-undergraduate level, as well as sample papers/study material for MBA, medical and engineering exams. The device also comes pre-loaded with entertainment apps like Zenga TV and Big Flix.

Additionally, Micromax is also offering a Tata Photon+ 3G USB dongle bundled with the device that will offer free data usage of 1 GB for two months. Although in a company blog post, Wicked Leak claims that this is actually a money-making scheme for Tata and Micromax and further claims that Tata may, in fact, be paying Micromax a certain amount per activation.

Last time we checked the Wicked Leak site, it had sold 774 Tablets.
