Samsung has extended its Galaxy smartphone range by announcing another version of mid-price segment product Galaxy Ace Duos. As the name states, the new smartphone will have dual SIM functionality and will support two GSM SIMs (the existing model of the smartphone supported GSM+CDMA SIMs). The smartphone will be made available in Russia starting next month after which it will be launched in Europe, Latin America and Asia, among others.
The mobile phone has a 3.5 inch TFT-LCD (320×480 pixel resolution) touchscreen and it runs on the Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) operating system (with Samsung’s Touchwiz user interface). It is powered by an 832MHz processor and has 512MB of RAM. The internal memory of the device is 3GB which is extendable to an additional 32GB with the help of a microSD card.
It also has a 5 megapixel auto-focus rear camera that can also record videos. On the connectivity front, it has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth V 3.0 and comes with a USB 2.0 port and a microSD port. The device also has FM Radio and RDS and supports GPS (A-GPS). The dimensions of the device are 112.74mm x 61.5mm x 11.5 mm and its weight is 122 grams. Samsung has provided a 1,300 mAh battery that should provide average battery life.
Also, the mobile phone comes with a ‘dual SIM always on’ feature that automatically forwards calls from the phone number on SIM 2, even if a user is on the phone with SIM 1′s number. Typically, in such dual SIM phones, if the customer is using one of the two SIM cards for making a call, all the calls of the second number automatically shows as busy. It also has ChatON; Samsung’s instant messaging service (similar to WhtsApp) that has been gaining in popularity in the recent times.
In comparison to the GSM+CDMA version (only 3.15MP), the new handset has a better camera and more internal memory. The earlier model sports a bigger battery (1650mAh in comparison to the new model’s 1300mAh), and is also heavier (by 3 grams) and slightly larger (112.4mm x 59.9mm x 12.44mm) in size.
And considering the fact that the older product is priced at Rs 13,900 (on the Samsung eStore), the new device should be priced in a similar range. Since the company has chosen to use the same name for both the devices it can be a little confusing for the buyer, so don’t forget to mention GSM+GSM or GSM+CDMA while purchasing the device.
