Samsung Kills Galaxy Nexus For India, Literally

After months of promising and beating around the bush, Samsung has finally confirmed that it will not launch the Galaxy Nexus smartphone in India, not now, not ever. What’s even worse is that the company did not even bother to release an official statement confirming the decision; it just casually did it on Twitter and that too as a reply to a tweet (you can see the tweet below).

The company first unveiled the Galaxy Nexus smartphone back in October 19, 2011. The device was the second mobile phone made by Samsung in direct collaboration with Google (the first being the Samsung Nexus S) and it was also the first mobile phone to run on Google’s Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) operating system (at least at the time). Read here for detailed specifications of the device.

At the time, the company had declared that the smartphone will be first made available in the US and Europe, followed by Asia and other markets. The company then said that the mobile phone will be launched in India in January this year, which got further delayed to March. Then March came and went but there was no sign of the handset, and now out of the blue the company says that it won’t release the smartphone in the country at all. And to top it all, even now the company has a dedicated page for the smartphone that still reads ‘Coming soon’ for India.

The Logic

Well, there actually is one (though we feel it’s just bad market strategy). Here’s why-

First the company launched its flagship product- the Galaxy S II in May last year. There is no doubt this was an awesome device and for many, the true iPhone killer (just look at its sale numbers). Then the company unveiled Galaxy Nexus (the next big thing from Samsung and Google) in October, which was immediately followed by the release of Galaxy Note, the first phone cum Tablet (Phablet) from the company.

For those looking for a decent sized powerful smartphone, there was Galaxy S II (4.3 inch screen) while for people looking to experience a powerful large screen device, there was the Galaxy Note (5.3 inch screen). And since both these devices were faring well in India, the company might have feared that the 4.65 inch Galaxy Nexus might eat into the sales of the existing smartphones in which the firm had already poured in large marketing weight.

So the company has decided to not launch Nexus and instead focus on bringing the so-called ‘next big thing’- the Galaxy S III in India (which by the way is being launched later tonight, so keep track of this space for more on that).

Although if you are a real Samsung fan and want to get a hand on Nexus you can still buy it from other markets, and we are not ruling out the possibility of its availability in the grey market.

So why is it a big deal?

It is so because unlike Galaxy S II and Note, the phone was made in direct collaboration with Google (even Galaxy S III won’t have that). What this means is that the mobile phone would always be the first device to get Android software updates from Google. And why is this important- it’s because S II and Note had to wait for more than half a year to get the ICS update, and there is a very good possibility that the same scenario will be repeated with S III when Google finally launches Jelly Bean, which is the next version of Android OS.

This aside, what’s the point of making a revolutionary device (that is what the company claims), when it never reaches the customers in the world’s second most populous country with growing number of affluent buyers?

According to me, the real reason why Samsung hasn’t released Galaxy Nexus in India is because people in India are not knowledgeable enough to understand its importance/existence. People in India focus more on “value for money” rather than quality. (check the success of the ridiculously large Galaxy Note – the bigger the better)

Samsung anyways copies Apple, fake Samsung!

Elison May 3, 2012 18:18

sad, really sad ! bad bad bad bad samsung…

Ballsung May 3, 2012 18:30

Very bad Samsung! What’s the use of S III… we all know it will be outdated in a year while Galaxy Nexus will stay up-to-date for 2-3 years. Look at the Nexus S… it was running ICS months before S II even got a whiff of it.

To show the reality of the business to Samsung, we Indians should boycott Samsung’s products alltogether.

Kaushal Menghaney May 3, 2012 18:47

Utterly dissappointing..!!

Yark May 3, 2012 23:05

Not to mention all of the mobile app development that is contracted out to India.

It’s time to slap Samsung by the consumers and other companies, after all it’s not a monopoly market. I’m not buying anything from Samsung until they launch the galaxy nexus.

Joy May 4, 2012 15:06

Its the right time to boycott all Samsung products. If the company has not been faithful towards the Indian market then why should we buy their products? Also, if Galaxy S III will be outdated with no timely updates, why should we utterly waste our money on the product in the first place??? and of course Samsung will always find an excuse not to give away the updates saying the H/W isn’t compatible or our support time is over and bla bla bla!!! We don’t deserve this. Consumer forums must be told what’s happening. And we should get what we rightly deserve.

I have been using this device for more than two months now and it has been an awesome awesome experience. Samsung really messed up here devoiding people of an incredible device. It might still be worth going for it in the gray market because, firmware updates are far more important than two extra cores that most apps may not utilize anyways.

piyush prakash May 5, 2012 22:07

THIS IS JUST ANOTHER EXAMPLE THAT SAMSUNG DOES NOT CARE AT ALL ABOUT AFTER SALES EXPERIENCE FOR USERS…… IF U R LUCKY U CAN GET OS UPDATE OTHERWISE U R ON YOUR OWN……WITH MY PAST EXPERIENCES I DO NOT TRUST SAMSUNG ANYMORE……

AM GETTING AN IPHONE…….WITH NEWEST VERSION I AM DAMN SURE TO GET LATEST VERSION OF IOS FOR AT LEAST 2 YEARS!!!!

Bhagat Malik May 22, 2012 17:30

If Nexus was never to be launched in India, why the hell samsung gave false promises?
This is an insult to our Indian market. Hope all of us realise it as soon as possible and start boycotting samsung.
Drop by Drop makes an ocean.
