Sony Ericsson Unveils Xperia Ray and Xperia Active

Sony Ericsson has unveiled its latest Android offerings, Xperia Ray and Xperia Active at the CommunicAsia 2011 in Singapore. The new mobile phones add to the growing line of Android operating system based mobile phones from Sony Ericsson. Let's take an in-depth look at both the mobile phones.

Xperia Ray

Xperia Ray runs on the Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) platform and has a 3.3 inch capacitive touchscreen reality display with Mobile BRAVIA Engine with 854 x 480 pixels and 16.7 million colours. It runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 1GHz processor with Adreno 205 GPU chipset and has 512MB of RAM. The inbuilt memory is 340MB which can be extended further till 32GB with a MicroSD card.

The mobile phone has an 8.1 mega pixels camera with Sony Exmor R CMOS sensor for mobile and 16x digital zoom. The camera can record high definition videos at 720p and has photo and video light for low light conditions in addition to having an aperture of f2.4. It has a front facing VGA camera for video chat.

Daniel Sandblom, Global Product Marketing Manager, Sony Ericsson said: "We expect Xperia ray to appeal to consumers who are looking for a combination of beautiful design and a rich feature set."

Sony Ericsson has integrated Facebook inside Xperia for better social interaction and it also has Timescape with Twitter integration. The dimensions of the device are 111mm x 53mm x 9.4mm and it weighs at 100 grams. The mobile phone has radio and the users can also play 3D games on the device. Additionally Sony Ericsson has provided Wisepilot with turn-by-turn navigation.

Sony Ericsson promises talk time and video play back of 6 and a half hours and audio play back of 36 hours. The device will be available in black, gold, white and pink colours and will be available globally in selected markets from Q3 2011. The price has not been disclosed.

Xperia Active

The target audience of Xperia Active are consumers with an active lifestyle. According to Sony Ericsson it is a dust proof and a water resistant and has wet finger tracking which ensures the phone works perfectly when either the screen or a user's fingers are wet. It has the same OS as Xperia Ray and has a 3 inch capacitive touchscreen with Mobile BRAVIA Engine with 320x480 pixels and 16.7 million colours. It has the same processor and RAM as Xperia Ray but the inbuilt memory is 320MB, again expandable up to 32GB with a MicroSD card.

The mobile phone has a 5 mega pixels camera with LED flash and 8x digital zoom and can record high definition videos at 720p. Like Xperia Ray, it also has and video light for low light conditions and has an f2.6 aperture. It has a front facing VGA camera for video chat.

It is packed with all the features and applications consumers need and also comes with a set of accessories that make it easy for them to take it everywhere, whatever their daily plans are."

The phone comes pre-loaded with sports apps that enable consumers to easily track their fitness levels. Users can set training route using the built-in GPS, barometer and compass. On-screen heart rate and pulse can be monitored in real time (enabled by ANT+ wireless networking technology), while the iMapMyFitness app can monitor day to day performance.

It also has Facebook inside Xperia, Timescape with Twitter integration, radio, 3D games and Wisepilot with turn-by-turn navigation. The dimensions of the device are 55mm x 92mm x 16.5mm and it weighs at 110.8 grams.

Sony Ericsson promises talk time of around 5 hours, video play back of 8 and a half hours and audio play back of 25 hours. The device will be available in orange and white band colours with changeable black or white back covers and will be available globally in selected markets from Q3 2011. The price has not been disclosed.
